At a glance
- Compare destination days using identical arrival and return assumptions.
- Four days require a selective Jodhpur visit; five allow a fuller split.
- Returning to Jodhpur creates another transfer.
Use the same arrival and return assumptions
Compare both versions as arriving in Jodhpur before the first main visit and leaving Jaisalmer after the final planned block. If your booked services do not fit those assumptions, shorten the sightseeing or add a night. For a return from Jodhpur, show the journey back from Jaisalmer as another transfer, not an invisible final step.
There is no dated transport booking attached to this guide. Check current train or flight options for your dates and ask a road operator for a realistic transfer estimate with breaks. A four-day itinerary beginning in Jodhpur is different from a four-day Delhi round trip.
The selective four-day version
| Destination day | Main block | Overnight logic |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive with time for Mehrangarh and a selective city visit | Jodhpur |
| 2 | Transfer to Jaisalmer, then a light town block if time allows | Jaisalmer city |
| 3 | Fort or haveli visit, followed by the agreed camp transfer | Desert property |
| 4 | Return from camp, a short city stop if feasible, then departure | Add a city night if return timing requires it |
The compromise is Jodhpur time. This is a taste of the city, not a full two-day Jodhpur guide plus a full three-day Jaisalmer guide. If Day 1 arrival slips, drop an optional attraction rather than making the intercity transfer begin after an exhausting sightseeing marathon.
What the fifth day buys
Use Days 1 and 2 for Jodhpur, Day 3 for the transfer and a light Jaisalmer introduction, Day 4 for the main city visit and camp transfer, and Day 5 for the camp return and final departure arrangements. That gives Jodhpur a proper second block and reduces the pressure to see it all immediately after arrival.
The extra day does not remove the need to check return transport. A morning departure on Day 5 may mean the camp night belongs earlier, or that you should stay in the city on the last night. Work backwards from the return ticket before assigning accommodation.
Use the Jodhpur city guide and Jaisalmer itinerary for attraction choices. This comparison is about allocating time between places, rather than repeating every sightseeing detail.
Open-ended route or back to the starting city?
| Return structure | Potential advantage | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Leave from Jaisalmer | Avoids deliberately returning to Jodhpur | Suitable service, fare and date availability |
| Return to Jodhpur | May fit the transport you can book | Additional transfer, hotel need and delay buffer |
| Use rail for one leg and another mode for the other | Can fit uneven leave or arrival times | Separate tickets, baggage and missed-connection exposure |
Do not choose solely by the cheapest individual fare. Add the local transfers, extra accommodation and time spent returning to the departure point. A small saving can disappear once the complete route is costed.
When one destination is the better decision
Choose Jodhpur alone for a shorter heritage city break without a desert-night requirement. Choose Jaisalmer alone if the sandstone city and desert setting are the main reason for travelling. If four total days away from Delhi leave very little destination time, one place can provide a fuller holiday than a rushed two-city circuit.
For a group, ask everyone to name the one experience they would most regret missing. If the answers cluster around one city, use the saved transfer time there. Combining destinations is worthwhile only when both contribute something the travellers want.

Provide the total time away from Delhi, whether you have booked transport, the preferred return city, and whether a camp night is essential. Request hotel nights by date, local and intercity vehicle coverage, meals and optional activity costs.
Ask RARA to confirm the available itinerary and operating company. The sample layouts above do not establish a scheduled departure, included Delhi transport or a guaranteed desert activity.
